Who the Exos X16 14 TB is for

It's at home in a rack or a garage, where 7,200 rpm of spinning rust can whirr away all day without bothering anyone. Seagate backs it for five years, which is a long time in drive terms.

Watch out for

It's a 7,200 rpm drive and you'll hear it working. CMR or SMR? Seagate's page we cite doesn't say.

On Backblaze's numbers it's neither better nor worse than the median, at 1.38% AFR with an interval that straddles 1.40%. Four of them in SHR or RAID 5 give 42 TB usable, or 38.2 TB once Windows has done its binary maths on it.

Specifications

Each value links to the Seagate page or datasheet it came from, and "Not published" means the maker doesn't list it there.

Failure rate

Backblaze has 10,455 of them in service as ST14000NM001G. They've clocked up 57,467 drive-years between them and 795 have died, which puts the lifetime AFR at 1.38% (95% interval 1.29% to 1.48%, a range wide enough to include the 1.40% median).
