Is the IronWolf 8 TB right for you?

It suits a small NAS that's tucked away in a cupboard or under the stairs, where the extra pace of 7,200 rpm is welcome and the extra noise isn't your problem. It's CMR, which is what you want anywhere near a RAID or ZFS rebuild.

Watch out for

If there's any chance you'll move to a bigger box later, a pro line saves buying drives twice. The trade-off is three years' warranty and a 180 TB a year workload rating, which is fine for a media library that mostly sits there and tight if you shift terabytes around every week (scrubs and rebuilds count towards it too).

No Backblaze failure rate for this one, as they don't run it in big enough numbers. A 4-bay box full of these gives 24 TB after one drive's worth of parity.

Each value links to the Seagate page or datasheet it came from, and "Not published" means the maker doesn't list it there.

Failure rate

There's no Backblaze figure for this one. We only publish a rate with at least 60 drives and 50 drive-years behind it, because below that the error bars are too wide to tell you anything. The reliability page has every model that clears the bar.
