MG10 range

Should you buy the MG10 20 TB?

It makes most sense when you're chasing terabytes per pound and the NAS sits somewhere noise doesn't matter. Think garage, or a rack in the cupboard under the stairs. Toshiba backs it for five years, which is a long time in drive terms. Its Backblaze record's good too, with 0.79% AFR across 25,546 drive-years and the whole interval below the 1.40% median for the drives they report. CMR, thankfully. SMR and parity rebuilds don't get on.

Watch out for

Being 7,200 rpm, it's in the noisier, warmer class of drive, and you'll want it somewhere you don't sit.

Four of them in SHR or RAID 5 give 60 TB usable, or 54.6 TB once Windows has done its binary maths on it.

Failure rate

Backblaze has 25,171 of them in service as TOSHIBA MG10ACA20TE. They've clocked up 25,546 drive-years between them and 201 have died, which puts the lifetime AFR at 0.79% (95% interval 0.68% to 0.90%, comfortably under the 1.40% median for the drive models they report).
