Run SHR across the 5 bays and 80% of the raw space is yours to fill. Or go SHR-2 for two-drive protection and still keep 60%, which is where we'd lean once the drives are 16 TB or bigger and a rebuild takes the best part of a day. Inside is an AMD Ryzen V1500B. It's x86, and Docker's happy. RAM goes up to 32 GB (ECC included), which is plenty for a couple of VMs as well as the usual containers.
No 10GbE out of the box, but the PCIe slot will take a card later. The two M.2 slots take NVMe drives for a cache or a small fast pool, and you can grow it to 15 bays with Synology's expansion units.
These are decimal TB, the way drive boxes count them, and Windows will show roughly 9% less. Got a mix of sizes? Put your own drives in the calculator and it'll work out the layers.
| Each drive | SHR (1 parity) | SHR-2 (2 parity) |
|---|---|---|
| 4 TB × 5 | 16 TB ≈ 14.6 TiB | 12 TB ≈ 10.9 TiB |
| 8 TB × 5 | 32 TB ≈ 29.1 TiB | 24 TB ≈ 21.8 TiB |
| 12 TB × 5 | 48 TB ≈ 43.7 TiB | 36 TB ≈ 32.7 TiB |
| 16 TB × 5 | 64 TB ≈ 58.2 TiB | 48 TB ≈ 43.7 TiB |
| 20 TB × 5 | 80 TB ≈ 72.8 TiB | 60 TB ≈ 54.6 TiB |
| 24 TB × 5 | 96 TB ≈ 87.3 TiB | 72 TB ≈ 65.5 TiB |
